I painted a human figure for a change.

I know my current line of work has been mainly animal focused. I’m not sure why. I guess I don’t like to paint landscapes or still lifes. And animals are an easy gateway to a fun quirky image with some character to it. I find drawing humans interesting too, but they are a lot harder to get ‘right’ or to transport to a fairytale world. I find it easier (and more fun) to create an image that is outside ‘everyday reality’ with a sense of magic and whim by painting animals. In case you were wondering…

Although I do like the result, I think I still prefer painting animals.

Also, I made a black dress. Black, you guys! No worries, I’m not planning to give up on bold use of colour any time soon. I’m still not completely sure if I like the black choice or not. It is something different for sure and does bring the person more to the foreground. But still, not sure if black can compete with any other fun popping colour.

Just FYI, I actually don’t own black paint. I make ‘black’ by mixing dark blue and brown and use a few layers to get it really dark.

And again, I made a little video of the process. It even has ukulele music.

I sometimes wish I could paint as quickly as my final speed painting video’s. That would be a neat superpower to have. Next to flying of course. And invisibility. But a good third superpower nonetheless.

  2. Hands are hard to paint and hard to draw. You did such a good job with the hands. This is a lovely painting and I think the color of the dress is perfect.

  6. I really like this one! I think the black dress works -- it's such a good contrast to the other colors (the bold yellow background, the bright red hair, the creamy skin tones). It stands out without competing, if that makes sense.
