Workspace make-over

Everyone needs an inspiring place to work in.

At my faculty students get a work space to work on their projects. Before even really thinking about my project, I always make it a priority to make my space a nice place to work in. If I’m going to spend whole days working there, expecting my brain to come up with creative ideas, it better be a nice environment.

I truly believe that if you make yourself at home somewhere and put some effort in making the space around you communicate how you want to feel, it will affect your work in every way. As I do design work and creativity is a big deal to my process, I can’t even imagine having it otherwise. But I believe that whatever job you do, you deserve a space that makes you feel motivated and comfortable.

My semester started again. Meaning I got out my polka dotted table cloth and super-effective post-it to do board (it helps me to actually concretize my activities at the beginning of the day and get them done), I bought a plant, I printed out over 50 quotes on play and hung them around the space (the domain I work in is centered around designing for play), got some fancy design prints and made an instant inspiration wall (read: a hanging marker and taped paper on the wall so I can start writing my wild ideas on the wall any time I feel like it). I might even have put a mini-fridge behind my storage cabinet (psst, don’t tell).

Some people giggle when they see me running around with flowers and polka dots on my 3 hour work spot transformation. I giggle when I know I have the most inspiring little spot of my space.

I might not yet have started on my planning. But hey. I will have an excellent space to work on that tomorrow.

  1. I absolutely agree-- a pretty, clean workspace is necessary for me to accomplish anything. Plus, it makes working that much more enjoyable. :)

  3. I totally agree with you! And I also need (and make) changes in my workspace all the time... So, I'm quite active around here. :)

I really like your polka dotted table cloth and all these quotes!

I wish you lots of inspiration and good work there!
Have a great semester, too. :)

    1. Ahh thanks :) That's great. I always feel like a change in workspace lifts me up a little as well. It is in the little things, isn't it?

  4. Of course! It's like when you have a written exam and you're in the classroom surrounded by students and you're told to write creatively for 30 minutes or something and you're like "How am I supposed to be inspired to write creatively right now? I'm in the most non-inspiring place ever!" I totally get this. And I'm glad you take the time to decorate your space even if other people giggle at you : ]

    1. I know right?! I don't understand how people coming up with exams like that actually believe in their testing method. It is creativity! I don't mind the giggles ;) I always feel like SOMEBODY should set a good example in a creative study as mine, some day they will understand :p

  6. Helemaal mee eens!! Ik vind het ook heerlijk om mijn klas leuk te maken voor het jaar begint (en tijdens het jaar heb ik altijd een paar verander momenten). Handig zo'n planning!

  7. Super cute make-over of your space... I wish I had a bigger desk space in my lab, it really isn't big enough to consider decorating... all there's room for is a million post-it reminders.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!

    1. Well, a million post-it reminders is a great start ;) You could use different colours and make pixel art from them :D

    Zit jij in Eindhoven?

Jij?

  14. I'm the same way! I can't even begin to think about working on something until the space around me is clean and organized. Otherwise I'll be way too irritated with the clutter/dustiness to be able to work comfortably. But then, some artists' studios are overflowing with stuff! It's interesting how different people like working in different atmospheres.

    1. That's true. But I think such studios have a different kind of mess. It's not really the 'paperwork that needs to get done and jobs that suck' kind of mess, rather an inspiring happy material and objects mess.

  15. I'm currently trying to turn a bare room into an inspiring craft room. It is so much easier to feel inspired in an inspiring space for sure.

P.S. I love the play quotes. I might just have to steal a few for my space too!

    Have a great weekend! :)
