Milk experiment

I don’t get bored that easily. In fact, I am almost never bored. I somehow always find some way of entertaining myself. But this week, for the first time this holiday, I found myself being slightly bored. It’s not that I didn’t know anything to do. It was just that I didn’t feel like doing anything.

But then I remembered the milk experiment.

I can get really excited about discovering how things work, experimenting and trying things that I haven’t done or seen before. It won’t surprise you then, that this video showing and explaining a simple milk experiment, has been on my ‘experiment to do list’ ever since I saw it for the first time.

So I went to the store and bought some milk. Then I repeated what I had seen in the video, and watched the substance before me come alive. I looked fascinated at how the different patterns evolved over time.

If you want to try it yourself, the only thing you need is a plate, some milk, food coloring and dish soap (see video demonstration for directions). I even made a little video of my own experiment.

Interesting things are everywhere, often in the small things around us. Question everything and the world will instantly become a more fascinating place.

I hid a banana peel under the bushes before my flat a few weeks back, because I wanted to see if they indeed take forever to deteriorate. I saw weird metal instruments with colored glass and half circles and degrees the other day in a vintage shop. Then later at home I found myself googeling until I had not only discovered that they were nautical instruments for calculating your location at sea, but actually understood how they worked.

The word ‘curious’ often has a negative connotation. Curiosity is not necessarily a good thing. But the thing is, I am not interested in which celebrity had an affair with whom. I am interested in understanding how clouds work and in getting excited about what will happen if I drop dish soap in my milk.

Ask ‘why’ a lot. Try new things. Be amazed by how beautiful mixing some colors using different densities can be. Be hungry for knowledge. Be amazed by the small beautiful wonders that are everywhere around you. Be curious. The good kind of curious that is, and the world will never be boring…

  1. Oh, wow! How CrAzY it gets when you add the dish soap. I love things like this where you can't really control the outcome, but just have to sit back and watch things unfold...

    1. Yeah I know! I was kind of thinking I should maybe make a routine out of it, like a scientific kind of post. Would be fun!

  8. Magical Day Dream!

Thank you for the skateboard tip! I would have messed up! Aaron Bros. sells skateboards to paint. They do appear to have varnish on them. I can't see the paint sticking. I'll sand it down.

I should just paint a board like the 'milk experiment'. It looks rad!

    1. You are welcome! Hope it turns out well with sanding it :) You can also try some stuff to get the greasy/oily stuff from it. I think you have chemicals for that but not sure what the name is. And I would love to see such a skateboard if you ever try haha!

    1. Yeah! I saw that the other day, and I have wanted to do that myself as well for ages. I tried it before a couple of months ago but think I used the wrong type of flower, it didn't really work. But definitely worth another try ;)

  11. That's absolutely lovely! I am going to make wind-up butterflies tomorrow, as soon as I get some supplies. You seem to me like a girl who'd enjoy that too, so here's the tutorial I'm going to use: http://www.youaremyfave.com/2012/05/08/wind-up-paper-butterflies-are-my-fave-guest-post-from-amelia/

Plus the story behind them is the most adorable thing ever :)
